Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Untitled Unmastered’ project just launched and is projected to sell 175-185,000 copies in its first week.
Countless rap fans have gotten their wish with Untitled Unmastered… a collection of eight demos and outtakes from Lamar’s 2015 opus To Pimp a Butterfly. Each of the tracks on Untitled Unmastered were written during the two-year writing and recording process of To Pimp a Butterfly.
As of now, the project is available only for streaming but a physical release is soon to follow. However, Fans are showing their appreciation by copping the release at a high rate. The projected first-week sales pale in comparison to To Pimp a Butterfly‘s 324,000 copies sold, but for a surprise release that had no true promo push, the numbers are impressive and show the power that K. Dot possesses.
Untitled Unmastered shows you behind the scenes as they skip the studio mixing and mastering processes that typically precede a recording’s commercial release. These recordings are as organic as possible. It is theses imperfections that make the moment. Kendrick Lamar, is a perfectionist and this choice was tough for him to swallow. Putting music out that is unfinished, not mastered and raw was a little nerve-wracking for him. Nonetheless, Lamar has proven his title in the industry and is on a new level of artistic freedom these days where he is at the point of being free to do anything that he wants to do.
Untitled Unmastered features production and guest spots from regular collaborators like Terrace Martin, SZA, Jay Rock, Punch, Sounwave and Thundercat and contributions from producers like Swizz Beatz, Hit-Boy, Bizness Boi, Nard&B and A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
